Abstract

This paper focuses on the exhibition ”Just after the War”, which was held in Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2015. This show had the potential to enliven the much needed discussion on Polish modernism in the second half of the 1940s and how to narrate it. On the one hand, this exhibition maintained some accepted narrative constructions, but on the other the sometimes unexpected character of the exhibition space and the visuality of many objects contested these narrative schemas. These discrepancies should encourage art historians to build more historically adequate models of narratives devoid of heroic terms so far vital for the Central and Eastern European myth of modernism.
