Ph.D. and Professor of Humanities, head of Holocaust Literature Research Group at the Institute for Literary Researches of the Polish Academy of Sciences, member of the Department of Theoretical Poetics and Semiotics of Culture at the Institute for Literary Researches of the Polish Academy of Sciences, founding member of the Polish Center for Holocaust Research at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, editor of Zagłada Żydów. Studia i Materiały [Holocaust Studies and Materials] yearly. In collaboration with Barbara Engelking, he developed the concept of the “Holocaust” gallery at the POLIN Museum of History of Polish Jews. He published: Text in the Face of Destruction: Accounts from the Warsaw Ghetto Reconsidered (1997, 2004, 2016); The Warsaw Ghetto. A Guide to the Perished City (co-authored with Barbara Engelking; 2001, Yale University Press 2009; extended and improved Polish edition 2013), Doświadczenia graniczne.
