Izabela Kowalczyk is an art historian, cultural studies scholar, academic teacher, critic and curator. She is a professor and Dean of the Department of Arts Education and Curatorial Studies at the University of the Arts in Poznan. She received her PhD from the Adam Mickiewicz University, Art History Institute in Poznan in 2001. Her dissertation, titled Ciało i władza we współczesnej sztuce polskiej [Body and Power in Contemporary Polish Art], was advised by Piotr Piotrowski. In 2012, she received her habilitation in cultural studies for the book Podróż do przeszłości. Interpretacje najnowszej historii w polskiej sztuce krytycznej [Journey into the Past: Interpretations of Recent History in Polish Critical Art]. The book analyzes case studies from Polish critical art that deal with history and memory. She has also authored books on critical art, feminism, and the reinterpretation of history in contemporary art. She has published over 200 articles in academic journals and edited volumes.
